Dear Stratton families:
I wanted to use this week's note to describe some essential elements of our literacy learning framework in Arlington. We are committed to a Workshop framework, which means putting a premium on students actually engaged in reading or writing during the school day for as much time as possible, with only a small teacher-centered 'mini-lesson', typically at the beginning of each session. Teacher input instead is in response to actual reading or writing, with teachers circulating around the workshop space, giving feedback either individually or in small groups. Students are charged with developing multiple iterations of their work, and also coached to give and receive feedback to and from one another. The pedagogical approach is both more subtle and impactful than a more teacher centered teaching approach. It also requires a lot of practice and feedback to and from teachers to get it right! Faculty are often witnessing each others' practice, both live and in video. It is an exciting and rewarding way to teach advanced literacy skills to young people. Please write or call or come by with any questions you may have about it.
